We all know exercise is an important part of aging gracefully. But, finding time to fit it in during a busy day can be difficult. We’ve compiled a list of ways to sneak it in throughout your day without a lot of extra time. By adding a few of these into your daily routine you can really start to increase the amount of exercise you’re able to squeeze in!
Stretching – As soon as you get out of bed each morning, or even while still lying down, take a moment to stretch. It’s a great way to get your mind and body going in the morning.
Park farther away – When pulling into a parking lot, it’s in our nature to try to find the closest spot. Why not intentionally park farther away to increase your steps each time? Imagine how many extra steps that will add up to in one year!
Take stairs instead of the elevator – This one is an oldie but goodie! Get your heart pumping by taking the stairs, up and down, any time you can.
Standing at your desk instead of sitting – There are so many options now for standing desks, walking desks, and even stationary bike desks! If you have to be in front of a computer doing work, make the most of it by multitasking with exercise.
Reminders to get up and move – Using your phone or Alexa, set reminders throughout the day to get up, stretch and move. Walk around the house or office, or even take a stroll outside.
Walk around while on the phone – If you have to be on the phone for longer than a couple of minutes, pace around while listening and talking. Or even head out for a walk around the neighborhood. Be sure to note how many extra steps you get each week!
Squats – While brushing your teeth, waiting for water to boil, standing by the window waiting for your Amazon package, or any other time you can do two things at once – get some squats in!
Plan your lunches – If you plan out what you are going to eat when you’re not hungry, in the evening or morning before your day gets started, you won’t be as tempted to make unhealthy choices when it’s time to eat.
Stay active when you would typically be sedentary – Do something active while watching television. Set up an exercise bike or treadmill and watch your favorite show while exercising. You can even do squats or small free weights too.
When all else fails, plan it out – Make a plan to do a brisk walk outside in the morning before your day starts, or in the evenings after dinner. You can even schedule it into your calendar to be sure to fit it in a few days a week.
Dance party! – At the end of a long day, sometimes a dance party in the kitchen while making dinner or cleaning up afterward can be a really fun and unexpected way to get your heart pumping!
Whether you choose one or two of these or try to do them all, you’ll be increasing the time you spend moving each day. Making small changes can really make a difference!
